The Great Southern Walk – Safety & Liability Statement
Last Updated: March 2025
This statement outlines our approach to safety and participant responsibility for The Great Southern Walk, scheduled for Sunday 14th September 2025, in and around Canterbury, Kent.
1. Our Commitment to Safety
TGSW is committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and well-managed walking event, in support of our partner charities:
Prince of Wales Youth Club
Rising Sun
We conduct all planning with reference to best practices in event risk management, volunteer training, and route assessment.
2. Participant Responsibility
By registering, you acknowledge and accept the following:
You are physically able to complete your chosen route (15 miles or 5 miles)
You will wear appropriate footwear and clothing for variable terrain and weather
You will carry any personal medications or mobility supports you may require
You will follow all marshals’ instructions, signage, and pre-event briefings
3. Route Risk Notice
Both walk routes include a mix of:
Condition | Examples |
---|---|
Uneven surfaces | Forest paths, grass verges, orchard tracks |
Potential obstacles | Tree roots, potholes, low branches |
Variable conditions | Mud, standing water, uneven elevation |
Roads & crossings | Rural lanes, cycle paths, A28 underpass |
Wildlife/hazards | Livestock fields, insects, stinging nettles |
The 5-mile family route has been adapted for pram and child access, but still includes a short (~200m) uneven section.
4. Medical Support
First Aid trained volunteers and mobile responders will be stationed at checkpoints
Emergency contact numbers will be shared on bibs and event signage
For emergencies, always dial 999 and alert the nearest marshal
5. Insurance & Liability
The organisers hold public liability insurance for the event
Personal accident insurance is not provided — participants join at their own risk
The organisers accept no liability for injury, loss, or damage unless due to proven negligence
6. Safeguarding & Vulnerable Persons
Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian at all times
Our charities work with vulnerable groups and are DBS-compliant
Any safeguarding concerns must be reported to a marshal or committee lead immediately
